Household securities holdings rise again

1 July 2026

Dutch household holdings of securities showed another increase in the first half of 2026, according to new figures from DNB. While the total value stood at € 204,7 billion at end of 2025, it has since risen to a new record high of € 234,2 billion. This increase is primarly driven by rising share prices.

Private investors continue to allocate the largest share of their funds to investment funds and ETFs (€153 billion) and the least to bonds (€6.4 billion). Holdings in equities amount to €74.4 billion. Among Dutch stocks, ASML, Shell, and Rabobank certificates are the top favorites. However, the Netherlands remains, first and foremost, a nation of savers. Dutch households still hold well over €550 billion in savings accounts. This is great pity according to ‘Bartjens’, FD’s number-cruncher, because in the long run investing yields far higher returns. It is also regrettably because various market experts argue that we need to invest more in European business if we are to avoid losing the economic battle against the US and China.
