50 years of women on the trading floor

3 February 2025

While in 1923 the Amsterdam Stock Exchange already had its first femaile member the trading floor always remained off-limits to women. This changed on 3 February 1975, exactly half a century ago today, thanks to a change in the employee regulations. Ine Pieters, the first woman to officially work on the trading floor 50 years ago, visited the exchange also to mark International Women’s Day.

Ine Pieters, now 81 years old, worked at a subsidiary of Rabobank at the time: Schretlen & Co. In interviews In De Telegraaf, she looked ahead in 1975 and back on that time in 2025. “The stock exchange was a male bastion, often even with men of 75 years old. Younger traders generally accepted my arrival, but the men who had always traded there found it difficult to get used to.” Ine Pennings was not the only woman on the floor for very long. Two more women joined the same day: Carla Tijhof and Els Wouters. And several more women followed suit soon after. This does not alter the fact that the trading floor continued to be dominated by male traders for a long time after 1975.
